The Official Blurb
“Spice trader Cinnamon’s quiet life is turned upside down when she ends up on a quest with a fiery demon, in this irreverently quirky rom-com fantasy that is sweet, steamy, and funny as hell.
All she wanted to do was live her life in peace—maybe get a cat, expand the family spice farm. Really, anything that didn’t involve going on an adventure where an orc might rip her face off. But they say the goddess has favorites, and if so, Cin is clearly not one of them.
After Cin saves the demon Fallon in a wine-drunk stupor, Fallon reveals that all he really wants to do is kill an evil witch enslaving his people. And who can blame him? But now he’s dragging Cinnamon along for the ride whether she likes it or not. On the bright side, at least he keeps burning off his shirt.… “

Book Review: That Time I Got Drunk & Saved a Demon
Hey romance lovers! It’s Nicole here, your co-host from Romance on the Rocks Podcast. This week, I dove into a wild, spicy, laugh-out-loud fantasy romp: That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon by Kimberly Lemming. You can catch my full review and our cocktail pairing on Season 2 Episode 24: That Time We Got Drunk and Did a Podcast.
Originally published in 2021, this book kicks off Lemming’s Mead Mishaps series — a fantastical world of witches, curses, demons and bold heroines who refuse to be damsels in distress.
🍷 My Hot Take
A hot demon and a spicy lady team up to destroy a witch’s horcruxes … and end up being unable to keep their hands off each other.
🌶️ The Story
Our heroine, Cinnamon, is a spice farmer and tradeswoman from the world of Mytheglin. She’s no-nonsense, practical and fiercely fabulous. Cin is the kind of woman who hides bread, beef jerky and booze in her many-pocketed skirt (#iconic).
One night, after a bit too much wine, Cin fends off a robber then fights off a demon (who she accidentally saved after a small earthquake of some kind). That demon is Fallon, a cursed but surprisingly considerate demon who explains that all demon attacks stem from a witch’s curse.
Together, they set off on a quest to destroy goblets that will free the demons from this curse — and let’s just say things get hot and hilarious along the way.
🧀 Favorite Moments
- The humor. From the very first pages, this book had me giggling. At one point, Cinnamon wakes up surrounded by cheese. When she asks Fallon why, he reminds her she declared herself the Cheese Queen the night before. I’m here for it.
- The pockets. Every woman’s dream: a skirt big enough for snacks, wine and jerky.
- The world-building. There’s an actual map of Mytheglin and Lemming’s imagination makes this fantasy world feel lived-in and vibrant.
🔥 Spice Level
Let’s call this one Jalapeño to Habanero. The scenes themselves are steamy but not overwhelming — though the language definitely cranks the heat. There’s a touch of BDSM flavor, too.
Fun fact: in this world, when demons find their mate, they enter a literal honeymoon phase that makes them want to … well, you know … constantly.

💭 What Didn’t Work For Me Personally
There was some frequent use of a couple of words I’m not a fan of (one starts with a c and the other goes meow) but the sharp dialogue, humor and solid pacing more than made up for it.
📚 Sequels to Check Out
The fun continues in the Mead Mishaps series:
- That Time I Got Drunk and Yeeted a Love Potion at a Werewolf (featuring Cinnamon’s best friend Brie, the cheese shoppe owner)
- That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Human (starring Cinnamon’s sister Cherry)
✨ Final Thoughts
Even with some language that made me squirm, I loved That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon. It’s witty, bold and bursting with heart. Kimberly Lemming’s voice is hilarious and fresh. And I’ll definitely be reading more from this series.
If you love fantasy romance, fierce heroines and laugh-out-loud moments, this one deserves a spot on your TBR.
