Year-End Romance Recap: Nachos, Cocktails, and Chaos
We popped into La Taqueria in Wausau, Wisconsin and ordered up giant trays of nachos and delicious cocktails for our end of your book feast and season recap. Our Season 2 books took us everywhere: wholesome slow burns, briny underwater kingdoms and chaos gremlin creature features. Across dozens of titles, a few trends stood out fast.

Spice Levels Became a Character
Jalapeño vs Habanero: How Heat Shapes Romance
Heat became a character all its own this year. One of us still prefers jalapeño-level, closed-door reads. (It’s Meghan.) The other chased habanero and beyond. (Nicole is still waiting for that Carolina Reaper level.) That contrast gave us a richer lens for seeing how spice can support — or sometimes smother — emotional stakes. When sex scenes arrived too early or too often without growth, tension drained away. But when chemistry synced with character arcs, even a single kiss carried more voltage than a dozen explicit chapters. That balance became the heartbeat of what makes a romance truly satisfying.
Couples That Stole Our Hearts
Quiet Tenderness in The Kraken’s Sacrifice
Thane and Catalina showed us that quiet tenderness has staying power. They respected each other’s boundaries and found connection through board games and care during illness.

Adventure and Pocket Snacks in Kimberly Lemming
On the other end of the spectrum, Kimberly Lemming’s heroine, Cinnamon, and her demon love charmed us with pocket snacks, admiration without conditions, and pure adventure energy.

Small Gestures That Build Trust
Small acts of understanding kept showing up: texting side by side to ease anxiety in Stay, or building blanket forts in How to Help a Hungry Werewolf. These weren’t filler moments—they were blueprints for how love adapts to the people in it. They made us think about the gestures we value in real life and why cozy rituals accelerate trust.
Settings That Did Heavy Lifting
Snowed-In Hotels and Cozy Bookshops
Settings carried their own weight this year. We fell for snowed-in luxury hotels where writers finally write and small-town series you wish you could move into.
Underwater Worlds and Fantasy Landscapes
We also loved underwater worlds, merfolk, undine and sea-drenched cities. Authors used these settings to play with scale, danger and cultural norms. That freedom created unforgettable moments, both beautiful and bonkers — including the double anatomy scene we can’t unsee. Monster romances won us over when bodies served the story instead of replacing it. Immersive worlds made the stakes and the kisses feel earned.
Lessons About Ourselves as Readers
Heat Preferences and Genre Taste
We learned a lot about our reading habits. One of us wants instant heat (it’s Nicole). The other prefers a mid-spice simmer with grounded emotion (that would, of course, by Meghan). Those differences sparked great recommendations, especially during our book swap and the October creature feature sprint.
What Disappointments Taught Us
Disappointments clarified our boundaries: anatomical hyperbole that breaks plausibility, one-note “smashing” with no character growth, and recycled metaphors that pull us out of the moment. Still, language became its own comedy. “Man root,” “snug portal” and “slick heat” lived rent-free in our brains and we’re still giggling about them.
Cocktails, Rituals, and Conversation
Drinks are always part of the ritual. A frosted cranberry cosmo with homemade puree proved dangerously sippable. Grapefruit rescued Malört in a surprise twist we didn’t expect. (Well, Nicole still thinks it’s garbage but Meghan likes it.) Cocktails framed our conversations with a lightness that balanced heavy craft talk and helped us notice pacing, consent and the line between kinky and careless.
Looking Ahead to Next Year
TBRs, Community Meetups, and Future Mischief
Next year we’re ditching forced segments, doubling down on community meetups, and letting fate pick our TBRs with a martini-glass number draw. Expect more mischief, more laughs and more curiosity about how love evolves when authors take big swings.
