Southern Scandals, Country Stars & Bluegrass Kings 🎸🐎
Hey y’all — Nicole and Meghan here! In our latest episode of Romance on the Rocks, we’re diving deep into the sultry, dramatic world of Southern romance novels. This week, we’re sipping something strong and chatting about two classics: Robert Vaughan’s Heart of Nashville and Janet Dailey’s Bluegrass King.
These books have everything — ambition, heartbreak, scandal and a whole lot of 1970s drama. From the smoky bars of Nashville to the elite horse farms of Kentucky, we’re peeling back the layers of love, lust and social expectations below the Southern charm.
🎤 Meghan’s Pick: Heart of Nashville by Robert Vaughan

Meghan kicked us off with a wild ride through the country music scene of the 1970s. Heart of Nashville centers on a group of artists all vying for the coveted Country Music Entertainer of the Year award — and let’s just say, things get messy fast.
There’s Buck Campbell, a superstar whose charm barely hides his bad behavior, and Sarah Macon, a talented singer haunted by her past. Her breakout song, written by the tortured alcoholic Lucky Bertram, becomes the emotional heart of the story.
As we unpacked the book, we couldn’t ignore the darker themes — mob influence, infidelity, questionable medical ethics (seriously, a husband hiding a terminal diagnosis from his wife?!), and outdated LGBTQ+ portrayals that really show how far society’s come since then.
We also had a lot to say about Judy Monroe, one of the few women who tries to take control of her life and sexuality — but not without facing the kind of double standards that still feel all too familiar.
🐎 Nicole’s Pick: Bluegrass King by Janet Dailey

Next up, Nicole brought the Southern heat to the Kentucky horse racing circuit with Bluegrass King. This one’s full of high stakes, family drama, and one very complicated love triangle.
Our heroine Dani starts out with some serious resentment toward Barrett, a wealthy race horse owner who she considers her sworn enemy. But, of course, that tension doesn’t stay platonic for long. There’s also Marshall, whose manipulation adds another layer of chaos to Dani’s emotional rollercoaster.
We tackled the uncomfortable parts head-on — including the problematic depictions of women and consent that were unfortunately common in older romance novels. Still, the book gave us plenty to unpack (and occasionally laugh about) as we balanced critique with our trademark sass and side commentary.
🌶️ Spice, Sass & Southern Drama
Of course, it wouldn’t be Romance on the Rocks without our Spicy Scoville Ratings! From smoldering glances to full-blown Carolina Reaper moments, we rated each book’s heat level — and let’s just say, it wasn’t all about the steam.
Between dissecting mob drama, horse racing scandals, and some absolutely bonkers 70s dialogue; we also found plenty to giggle about. Because even when the stories get dark, we’re all about keeping things real (and fun).
